So this month we started learning to play guitar in the 5th grade. First we learned the anatomy of the instrument, how it works in comparison to an orchestra instrument, how to read chord boxes (tableture) and how to press on the strings for tone production. This week we started learning how to switch back and forth between the G and C chords so we could play along with Hootie and the Blowfish's "I Only Want to Be With You." WE ALSO spoke about why 'my' guitar sounds so much louder than the school guitars. I was very impressed with the line of questions the kids have come up with. You would be very proud!

I don't know about you, but I am pretty sure I'll be struggling to remember to write "2017" I mean, "2018" for a while. But in the meantime I have been readying the newest additions to the Music Class Instrument Collection for this month! 5th graders are learning to play guitar and I'm pretty excited at how quickly they are learning! I can almost see some of them wanting a guitar when they move up to the middle school. Just sayin'. The other grades have embarked on fun activities involving creativity in song and movement. Students wishing to join Chorus may do so by taking a permission slip (hanging outside the music room) and auditioning as per the schedule next week. The Elementary Music Festival (EMF) selections for band and orchestra are complete, now we await the choral children to be selected. FINALLY anyone wanting to prepare a solo for the NYSSMA Festival must consult with their private teacher first, then get a form which is hanging outside the music room in a manila envelope. This is such an exciting time of year! Thank you so much for supporting your children's journey in music!
